California’s Newsom to Face Republican Dahle in November Election

The Democratic incumbent is the heavy frontrunner in a state where no member of the GOP has won statewide office since 2006.

California Governor Gavin Newsom will run for re-election against Brian Dahle, a Republican seed farmer and state senator, after they emerged as the top two vote-getters in a crowded field of primary contenders.

The Democratic incumbent led the group of 26 candidates with about 57% of votes, according to the Associated Press, after about 48% of votes had been counted Tuesday evening. Dahle, whose sprawling senate district covers California’s rural northeast, won 16.7%.
