The reopening of two of China’s most important cities from lockdowns and restrictions is facing setbacks, with a new flareup in Beijing and sporadic infections still being found in Shanghai.

Of China’s top 50 cities by economic size, none currently have widespread restrictions in place, though some targeted curbs have been imposed. Authorities in Beijing halted the resumption of in-person teaching for elementary school students, some residential compounds have been locked down, and Chaoyang district -- where the popular bar blamed for rising cases is located -- will undergo a three-day mass testing exercise from Monday.
