Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. has raised the stakes in a legal dispute with smaller rival China Aviation Lithium Battery Co. Ltd. as competition for electric-vehicle customers turns increasingly cut throat.

CATL, as the world’s biggest EV battery maker is known, this week said it increased a damages claim against CALB for alleged patent infringement to 518 million yuan ($77.4 million) from 185 million yuan. The Ningde, Fujian-based company says CALB is infringing upon five of its patented battery-related products and structures.
