U.S. stocks fell to their lowest level since May as investors fled for safety with Russia starting a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The benchmark S&P 500 Index dropped 2.4% at 9:32 a.m., marking its fifth straight day of losses amid the escalating crisis. Ten of the 11 major industry groups were lower, with consumer discretionary and technology sectors leading the declines. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 index tumbled 2.9% entering its first bear market since the pandemic. The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average sank 2.4%, and is now in technical correction territory.
