Salmar’s $1.7 Billion Bid for Salmon Rival Forces Out Mowi

  • Demand for salmon has sparked flurry of M&A among growers
  • Norway is the world’s biggest producer of farmed salmon

The world’s biggest producer of Atlantic salmon, Mowi ASA, is walking away from a planned bid for rival NTS ASA after Salmar ASA announced a higher offer.

Salmar’s bid comes amid a flurry of activity in Norway’s salmon farming industry, the biggest in the world, as demand for the red-fleshed fish has pushed up prices. The key prize is Norway Royal Salmon, which Salmar offered to buy in August only to lose out to NTS, which seized a majority stake.
