The Republican National Committee declared Congress’s investigation into the deadly assault on the U.S. Capitol last year to be a “persecution of ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse” in a resolution approved at its annual meeting.

RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a statement after the vote that the description referred to people who were protesting at the Capitol, not those engaged in violence. But the language seemed to legitimize the deadly assault that injured more than 140 police officers, forced lawmakers to flee to safety and interrupted the counting of Electoral College votes for President Joe Biden.
