Italy begins its papal-style vote to choose a new president Monday with Prime Minister Mario Draghi touted as a top contender for the job.

The former European Central Bank president was tapped by current President Sergio Mattarella to lead a so-called technocratic government in February 2021 at the height of the pandemic and as a non-politician would likely enjoy cross-party support in assuming the new role. Draghi’s reform agenda has been running out of steam, and he has signaled that he’d be open to making the switch to president.
