Argentina Monetary Policy Requires Real Positive Rates, IMF Says

  • Fund says further discussions needed with Argentine officials
  • Both sides reached ‘general understandings’ on some topics

The International Monetary Fund said Friday that latest talks with Argentina on a new program included discussion of an “appropriate” monetary policy with interest rates that are higher than inflation.

After a week of meetings in Washington with Argentine officials, the IMF made its most detailed outline yet for the type of inflation strategy Argentina needs to implement as part of a program to reschedule payments on more than $40 billion in debt.
