Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer set up Thursday night votes on a short-term debt ceiling increase that would leave the battle to be rejoined less than two months from now, in the middle of an already packed congressional agenda.
Senator John Thune, the chamber’s second ranking Republican, said there would be enough GOP votes to cut off debate, but no Republicans would vote for passage. Democrats will have 50 votes to pass the bill, with Vice President Kamala Harris providing a tie-breaker if necessary.
