The city’s social scene has started its comeback.

On a Saturday night in mid-August, Eric Adams dropped into a party in Water Mill, N.Y.—a campaign fundraiser at the home of real estate developer Jared Epstein—and laid down the gauntlet.

“January 2, I’m on a plane to Miami, and I’m telling everybody in Miami: ‘Get your ass back to New York. This is your city,’” Adams, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, said to whoops and hollers.
