The Pentagon will ask commercial U.S. air carriers to help in the evacuation of U.S. citizens and others from Afghanistan by providing a total of 18 planes, confirming a move first reported Saturday.

Another 7,800 people were evacuated by the U.S. and its partners in the latest day, even as Kabul’s airport remained chaotic. Seven Afghan civilians were reportedly killed in a stampede.
