Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has briefed President Sergio Mattarella on his search for broader support after the defection of a junior ally turned his coalition into a minority government.

Conte met the head of state, who would oversee any attempt to form a new administration, to discuss the votes of confidence which the government won in the lower house on Monday and in the Senate on Tuesday, according to a senior state official who asked not to be named in line with policy.
