Tokyo called on residents to reduce trips outdoors and asked bars, restaurants and karaoke parlors to close early as the city combats a surge in coronavirus infections.

Governor Yuriko Koike announced the steps on Wednesday, as the city reported 401 new coronavirus infections in a single day, while serious Covid-19 cases rose to 54.
