The powerful U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other trade groups won new guidance from the federal government outlining exemptions to virus lockdowns that could send many employees back to work -- and risk exposing them to the spreading coronavirus pandemic.

The chamber, which is the biggest lobbying spender in Washington and a major force in Republican politics, had urged President Donald Trump in a letter Wednesday to declare nearly two dozen categories of businesses and services to be “essential.”
