Matteo Salvini, Italy’s de facto leader, is dangling the possibility of a snap election before voters as the scandal that has become known as “Russiagate” continues to make headlines.

Speculation that the government could collapse has intensified with Salvini in non-stop campaign mode, routinely sniping at his ally in the populist coalition, the anti-establishment Five Star Movement leader Luigi Di Maio.
