China Still Maintains Substantial Protectionist Barriers: Chart

The basic U.S. contention -- that China is benefiting from an open global trade system while maintaining substantial protectionist barriers itself -- is true, according to Tom Orlik, chief economist for Bloomberg Economics. On most measures, China is markedly more closed than other major economies. This suggests there’s room for concessions from China that would avoid the worst-case outcome of a major trade clash between the world’s two biggest economies.
