Sudan's President Says Russia to Help Modernize Nation's Army

Sudanese President Umar al-Bashir said military programs with Russia will modernize the African nation’s army and protect it from any external threat.

Al-Bashir didn’t give more details on the cooperation during Thursday’s speech to troops in Port Sudan that was broadcast on state TV. In November he told Russian President Vladimir Putin that Sudan is seeking its help to upgrade its army and “would also like to discuss the use of military bases in the Red Sea,” where he complained of “U.S. interference.”
