Dow Average Far From a ‘Trump Slump’

The blue-chip benchmark would have to drop 36 percent to erase post-election gains

The roaring stock market had been one of President Donald Trump’s favorite bragging points. Now his detractors want him to take the blame as the “Trump bump” suddenly turned into a jarring slump that pushed the Dow Jones Industrial Average down as much as 10 percent from its peak. Regardless of whether the commander-in-chief had any real impact on either move, the blue-chip benchmark would have to drop an additional 6,580 points, or 36 percent, to wipe out its post-election gains.
