Health Insurance Premiums Rising Faster Than Inflation in Australia

Industry average is increasing two times faster than inflation growth estimates

Shares of Medibank Private Ltd., Australia’s largest health insurer, closed at a record high Thursday after the company announced health insurance premiums would increase 3.88 percent on average from April 1. That’s slightly below competitor NIB Holdings Ltd, and the industry average of 3.95 percent. Still, it outpaces Australia’s inflation which may have risen 2 percent last year, according to a Bloomberg survey of 23 economists.
