The Moment of Truth Draws Near for Some U.S. Retailers

Volume of bankruptcy filings is historically the highest in January

It will soon go from the most wonderful time of the year to the most dreaded for some U.S. retailers. That’s because January is the industry’s peak season for bankruptcy filings, according to data compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence dating back to 1981. A spike in new bankruptcies this month would follow a year in which retailers went bankrupt at a faster pace than during the Great Recession of 2007-2009.
