Bumper-to-Bumper SUVs Lure Americans

As the consumer pivots away from coupes and sedans, manufacturers are flooding the market with bigger vehicles to satisfy demand

Take one look at the offerings at the Los Angeles Auto Show and you’ll know this: There’s huge appetite for SUVs as the American consumer pivots away from coupes and sedans. Fifteen football fields of space is crawling with crossovers from Nissan Motor Co. and Hyundai Motor Co., as well as beefier sport utility vehicles built by BMW AG and Toyota Motor Corp. While total industry sales are slipping, manufacturers have found respite in SUVs of all shapes, sizes and price segments, and analysts see the selection of such models continuing to grow through 2020.
