What's Ahead for Merkel as Coalition Talks Collapse

Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier urged the country’s political parties to return to the negotiating table and avoid the need for new elections.

Steinmeier was speaking to reporters in Berlin a day after Chancellor Angela Merkel’s efforts to build a four-party coalition collapsed, plunging Europe’s biggest economy into uncharted territory. Disputes among the prospective partners over issues including immigration proved insurmountable, prompting the Free Democrats to walk out late Sunday night.
