The automaker has widened the sales gap over luxury-car rival BMW

BMW AG faces a widening sales gap with Mercedes-Benz. Even as CEO Harald Krueger prepares for a record expansion of BMW’s lineup, he’s approaching the race for the luxury-car market as a marathon and not a sprint. That puts the focus on profitability rather than deliveries, as he presents third-quarter results on Tuesday with the goal of keeping automaking margins in a range of 8 percent to 10 percent of revenue while spending to develop self-driving, electric cars.
