The country’s central-bank chief is the best paid in the euro area

When it comes to central bankers’ pay, there’s little obvious pattern in the euro area: Belgium’s Jan Smets makes almost five times as much as bottom-of-the-list Vitas Vasiliauskas of Lithuania. Belgium’s economy is barely one-eighth the size of neighboring Germany’s, yet Smets earns 8 percent more than Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann.
