Puerto Rico's Power May Be Out, But Most of Its Casinos Are Back

Puerto Rico's Debt Burden Impedes Road to Recovery

While the vast majority of Puerto Rico remains without power, most of its casinos are back in business, according to the head of Puerto Rico Tourism Co.

Thirteen of the island’s 18 casinos are operating again, bouncing back from the trail of destruction that Hurricane Maria left last month, Jose Izquierdo, executive director of the tourism group, said in an interview in San Juan Wednesday. Cruise operations have resumed, and 81 of the 155 hotels the company endorses are open, he said.

As of Wednesday, more than 89 percent of customers on the island were still without power. That’s actually up from a day ago because of a tie line between two power plants that the U.S. Energy Department said may have have tripped on Tuesday afternoon, causing outages in San Juan.
