Thirty-One Killed, Many Injured During Northern Indian Protests

About 31 people were killed and many injured in the northern Indian state of Haryana during protests by followers of religious leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who was convicted of rape by a court.

“The situation in most of the part of Haryana is tense but under control,” according to K.S. Dhatwalia, a spokesman of India’s Home Ministry.

Authorities in Punjab state imposed a curfew in some areas while prohibitory orders were issued in some parts of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, the nation’s capital, to prevent violence spreading.
