Hedging Surges With Revival of Market Turmoil

Demand for protection against large moves has jumped to the highest level since June 2016

With the return of market volatility last week, investors have increased hedging. A Bank of America Merrill Lynch index tracking demand for protection against large moves in global stocks and currencies rallied to its highest level since the aftermath of last year’s Brexit vote. That occurred as a gauge of financial market stress climbed to an almost four-month high.
