Trump, North Korea Headlines Reliably Send VIX Pulse Racing

There’s not much that’s sparked stock volatility since Donald Trump’s election, but one reliable signal comes from the president himself.

When media mentions of Trump and North Korea start to rise, the CBOE Volatility Index gets jumpy, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The chart below shows the price of the VIX compared with the volume of stories mentioning both topics on the Bloomberg terminal.

The latest instance came Tuesday when the two terms appeared in 482 stories, almost 400 more than the average since the election. The VIX jumped 10.4 percent, the biggest one-day rise since July 6, which was the last time news about the topics spiked.
