Stout Beer Surges in China, Eclipsing American Market

Demand for the dark brew seen doubling on the mainland

Chinese drinkers are projected to consume 264 million liters of stout beer this year, eclipsing the U.S. as the top market for the dark brew worldwide, according to data from Euromonitor International. American drinkers had previously taken the stout crown from the British in 2013. Both markets are now growing at a fraction of the pace in China, where brewers like Diageo Plc’s Guinness and Tsingtao Brewery Co. have benefited from growth of more than 10-fold in the last five years. Euromonitor projects that Chinese demand for stout will more than double to 658.7 million liters by 2021.
