South Africa Power Sales Drop to a Decade Low

South African power utility Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd. has spent billions of dollars on more generation capacity, yet it’s selling the least electricity to local consumers in more than 10 years. Last year’s drop in domestic demand, which makes up about 93 percent of total sales, wasn’t helped by the country’s second recession in less than a decade. Customers have taken to the courts to fight the producer’s efforts to raise tariffs that on average have climbed at more than double the rate of inflation since 2007.
