Perella Weinberg Partners LP, the firm founded by Joseph Perella and Peter Weinberg, hired former Standard Chartered Plc banker Geraldine Murphy as part of its expansion into oil and gas advisory following the acquisition of Tudor Pickering Holt & Co.
Murphy, who will be based in London as a partner for Perella Weinberg and managing director at Tudor Pickering, will provide strategic and financial advice to companies in the energy sector, according to an emailed statement. She will also join Tudor Pickering’s leadership council.
The Standard Chartered veteran most recently worked as the U.K. bank’s global head of oil and gas corporate advisory and before that was a founding member of boutique adviser Harrison Lovegrove. Murphy, who began her career as a geologist, has more than 25 years’ experience in energy advisory, according to the statement.
Energy deals have increased 37 percent to $145 billion so far this year, led by transactions in the U.S. in pipelines and natural gas, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Deal activity will continue with a mix of asset sales, private equity transactions and some corporate consolidation even though oil prices remain low, said Bobby Tudor and Maynard Holt, chairman and chief executive officer of Tudor Pickering, respectively.
“The rest of the world outside of the U.S. is really important to the balance of production, power and growth in the energy sector,” Tudor, who is also co-head of advisory at Perella Weinberg, said in a telephone interview. “We can’t be the world’s leading energy adviser without being really smart about what’s going on outside of the U.S. market, and Geraldine is the right person for the job.”
Perella Weinberg has hired from larger rivals including Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo & Co. in the past. The advisory and asset-management firm accelerated its expansion last year by combining with Houston-based Tudor Pickering to build expertise advising on mergers and restructurings, and also to manage funds for clients.
With more than 600 employees, Perella Weinberg is based in New York and has offices in Abu Dhabi, Denver, Dubai, San Francisco and Calgary as well as the U.K. capital.
