Immigration Lifted U.K. Population to a Record in 2016: Chart

Immigration drove the U.K. population to a record 65.6 million in the year before the Brexit vote. Of the 538,000 increase from a year earlier, arrivals from other countries accounted for more than 60 percent. Prime Minister Theresa May is facing calls to abandon her target of bringing annual net migration below 100,000 after it was left out of Wednesday’s Queen’s Speech outlining the government’s new legislative program.
