Kenyan Army Says 31 Al-Shabaab Militants Killed in Somalia Raid

Kenya’s army said it killed 31 al-Shabaab fighters in a raid on two of the Islamist militants’ bases in southern Somalia.

The air and ground assault was carried out on Sunday, the Kenya Defence Forces said in a statement emailed Monday. Weapons including 11 AK-47 assault rifles and four improvised explosive devices were seized after the raids, it said.

Kenyan forces began an incursion into southern Somalia in 2011 to fight al-Shabaab, which has waged an insurgency in the Horn of Africa country since 2006. The militants continue to carry out cross-border raids in areas including northeastern Kenya.
