Jobless Turks at Record High on 24% Youth Unemployment: Chart

The number of jobless Turks rose to a record last year as the unemployment rate hit an 81-month high of 12.7 percent in December. Youth unemployment rose to 24 percent after the economy shrank in the third quarter. Syrian refugees, rising bankruptcies, purges and a crackdown on businesses after last year’s coup attempt also contributed to the increase, says Ozgur Altug, chief economist at BGC Partners in Istanbul.
