Euro-Area Inflation to Recede in 2018 as Oil Effect Wanes: Chart

A faster-than-previously forecast pickup in euro-area inflation probably won’t last. The European Commission predicts the rate will slip from 1.7 percent this year to 1.4 percent in 2018 as the impact of higher energy costs fades and signs of an increase in underlying price pressures have yet to emerge. The European Central Bank, which aims to keep inflation just below 2 percent, will update its projections on March 9.
