In Britain It’s Gin O’Clock as Spirit Makes a Comeback: Chart

In 18th century London, gin was so cheap, plentiful and popular that it helped push the capital’s death rate above its birth rate. British artisans are changing its image and demand is booming as craft distilleries concoct varieties infused with homegrown ingredients such as rhubarb and elderflower. Marks & Spencer Group Plc is among those riding the wave: helped by its eight new British gins, the retailer’s sales of the spirit rose 150 percent last year.
