Apple's power to stir the kind of excitement in adults that children feel about Santa's arrival may be waning, especially for the company's Mac devotees. Bloomberg Technology's Mark Gurman interviewed people familiar with Apple's inner workings to find out what's going on inside the company and why it seems that the Mac is getting far less attention. –Emily Banks
Here's how Apple has alienated its Mac loyalists: Mac upgrades, once a frequent ritual, are few and far between. The Mac Pro, Apple's marquee computer, hasn't been refreshed since 2013. The affordable and flexible Mac mini was last upgraded in 2014. And when a new machine does roll out, the results are sometimes underwhelming, if not infuriating, to devotees.
Uber lost more than $800 million in the third quarter, not including its Chinese operation. In the first nine months of this year, the ride-hailing company lost significantly more than $2.2 billion, according to a person familiar with the matter. At the same time, the company's revenue has continued to grow even after leaving the world's most populous country.
This will be the worst year for IPOs since the credit crisis. Despite the S&P’s 11 percent gain, despite the average 18 percent return for successful IPOs, despite volatility that eased from 2015, the last 12 months have seemed as silent as a graveyard for deals. Going by the number of listings and the amount raised, it hasn’t been this dead for offerings since 2009.
Facebook risks a multimillion-euro fine for allegedly misleading EU merger watchdogs when it won approval to buy WhatsApp in 2014. The EU’s antitrust authority said it suspects Facebook supplied "incorrect or misleading information" on linking data with WhatsApp as officials investigated the tie-up two years ago. Approval for the $22 billion deal isn’t under threat.
