Speaking at a forum in Beijing, Vice Finance Minister Zhu Guangyao referred to a video of Arabella Kushner, Donald Trump’s granddaughter, reciting Chinese poetry in a performance that was shared on social media in China.

The youngster’s understanding of Chinese culture underscored the strength of the ties between the two nations, said Zhu, adding that China and the U.S. needed to keep moving forward together.

The nod towards cultural ties contrasts with tensions over Taiwan, China’s role in the South China Sea -- and Trump’s campaign pledges to take action against China over what he said were its unfair advantages in trade.
