Valls Would Have to Quit to Challenge Hollande, Le Foll Says

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls would have to resign if he intends to challenge President Francois Hollande in the Socialist Party’s primary for next year’s presidential election, according to the government spokesman.

“There will be no primary between the president and the prime minister,” Stephane Le Foll said in an interview Monday on Europe1 radio.

Hollande will decide whether to run for re-election “in coming days,” said Le Foll, who said he doesn’t know if Valls wants to run as well. If Valls runs, “then he is no longer prime minister,” Le Foll says.

Valls said in a newspaper interview published yesterday that he was “ready to lead the fight for 2017.”
