Uganda Police Arrest Regional King After 55 Killed in Clashes

Authorities in Uganda said they arrested a traditional king in the country’s west after fighting between police officers and militiamen that claimed at least 55 lives.

The Rwenzururu king, Charles Wesley Mumbere, is being held at a police station in the town of Kasese, Uganda’s police force said Sunday on its Twitter account. His arrest follows an attack by a militia and subsequent violence in which a total of 14 police officers and 41 “attackers” were killed, the police said.

The assailants used explosives, guns and spears to assault security personnel, and 15 “ring leaders” have been arrested, the police said. Mumbere has denied having any connection to the militia, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported.
