Diageo Misfires in U.S. as Flavored Smirnoff Fad Withers: Chart

The fading craze for flavored spirits is weighing on the U.S. spirits market and industry leader Diageo Plc is hurting more than most. The Smirnoff vodka maker, which gets about a third of sales from North America, is finding that variations such as Crown Royal Regal Apple whiskey are no longer enough to keep it ahead of the pack. Heading the competition is France’s Pernod Ricard SA, whose Jameson Irish whiskey and Olmeca Altos tequila are giving it an edge in the battle for drinkers’ palates.
