Burundi Police Detain Journalists at Mass-Grave Siteby
Burundi authorities arrested two journalists and their driver in the capital and later handed over one of them, an American, to the U.S. Embassy, according to police spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye.
The three were arrested at the site of a mass grave the government says contains bodies of its supporters murdered by rebels. The Burundian journalist and driver are accused of trying to destroy proof of the deaths, Nkurikiye said on his Twitter account Sunday.
“I’m safe, but remain extremely concerned for my Burundian colleague Gildas Yihundimpundu and our driver Pascal,” the American journalist, Julia Steers, said on her Twitter account.
Another Burundian journalist working for Catholic broadcaster Radio Maria was arrested earlier this month in the same northern Bujumbura neighborhood and remains in jail.
