The Eight Best New Men's Fragrances Out This Fall

From smoky and spicy to citrus and fresh, these are the scents we love this season.

It may seem as though the fragrance industry invented the idea that you should change your scent for each new season as a way to sell more bottles of perfume. But the fact of the matter is, when summer turns to fall, you'll find yourself wearing different clothes and spending more time indoors. It actually makes sense to switch a scent. The new ones out this season are fresh, smoky, and contain hints of the forest. Here are eight we love.  


Burberry Mr. Burberry

Released earlier this year, Mr. Burberry is woody yet fresh, with gentle herbal tones. Top notes includes grapefruit, tarragon, and cardmom with heart and base notes of birch leaf, cedarwood, and guaiac wood. I've tested it out, and it smells better on the skin than straight out of the bottle, so be sure to give it a test run. Margiela Replica Flying

Margiela released four scents with its new Replica collection that refer to four different fantasy scenarios: Dancing on the Moon, Across Sands, Soul of the Forest, and Flying. The one that's best for fall, to my nose, is Flying; It's light and fresh and can be worn by both men and women. It features an airy citrus cologne with svelte notes of bergamot, neroli, and orange flower. The bottle features a laboratory-style label in Margiela's signature metallic silver foil. (100ml, $180,


Tom Ford Vert d'Encens

The new Vert d'Encens is filled with floral notes such as lavender, bergamot, and hints of smoky wood and citrus. It's one of three new fragrances Tom Ford introduced this fall, each presented in a dramatic dark bottle. (50 ml, $225,  


Comme Des Garçons Black Pepper

If you like mysterious and masculine scents, you’re going to love Comme des Garçons latest fragrance, blackpepper. You'll smell warm, dry, Madagascar Pepper, as well as cedarwood, Akigalawood, and a caramelly resin of Tonka bean. Turnbull & Asser 71/72

The English label teamed up with Floris perfumers to launch 71/72, a unisex fragrance that was introduced this fall. It's named after Turnbull & Asser's flagship store at 71/72 Jermyn Street in London, and the fragrance was designed to remind you of the feeling when you first walk in the store. It's rich and sweet, with hints of mandarin, bergamot, and juniper, and the base notes include sandalwood, boisamber, and frankincense. Only 200 bottles will be poured, and each will be personally signed and numbered by the perfumer Penny Ellis. (100 ml, $265,


The Art of Shaving Coriander & Cardamom

In honor of the brand’s 20th anniversary, the Art of Shaving launched a new line of fragrances that pay homage to barbering traditions and luxurious essential oils. Coriander & Cardamom is a fresh twist on a traditionally warm and spicy scent and nod to Middle Eastern barber traditions. Rag & Bone Bergamot

The New York-based label just launched its first fragrances, a line of eight unisex scents whose modest yet tactile glass bottles were molded at Heinz Glas’s 400-year-old factory in Tettau, Germany. Of the eight, Bergamot stood out the most for me. The scent is soft and soothing, similar to the scent after getting a hot soothing towel at your barbershop but with a citrus twist. (50 ml, $140,
