Hollande Demands Pressure on Russia to Maintain Aleppo Ceasefire

French President Francois Hollande said “we must put pressure” on the Syrian regime and its Russian backers to prolong a ceasefire in Aleppo.

Hollande will be meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin Wednesday evening in Berlin, mainly to talk about Ukraine, though Syria will also be discussed.

“I will do everything to convince Vladimir Putin to continue with this ceasefire,” Hollande said after a meeting in Paris with Syrian relief groups, without indicating what sort of steps he’d take. Hollande said humanitarian aid must be allowed into Aleppo.

The French Foreign Ministry is also hosting a ministerial-level meeting of 20 countries and organizations Thursday to discuss the stabilization of the Iraqi city of Mosul once a U.S.- and French-backed military offensive has pushed out Islamic State.
