Niger to Host Logistical Base for German Peacekeepers in Maliby
Niger will host a logistical base for 650 German troops that have been deployed to the United Nations peacekeeping mission in neighboring Mali, President Mahamadou Issoufou said Monday.
Issoufou spoke to reporters after talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who visited the West African nation as part of a three-day tour on the continent. Merkel pledged to assist the government with financial aid to help fight militants and stem the flow of migrants to Europe, he said in the capital, Niamey.
“Cooperation with countries like Germany is very useful for us from a security point of view, like the cooperation we have with France and the United States,” Issoufou said. “Don’t listen to those who think that the presence of some of our friends here is a cause of weakness.”
