Commander of Malian Armed Group Killed in Car Bomb in North

Cheikh Ag Haoussa, a principal commander of the Malian former rebel group Coordination of Azawad Movements, was killed in a car bomb on Saturday in the northern town of Kidal, Almou Ag Mohamed, a spokesman for the group, said by phone.

An ex-member of the jihadist group Ansar Dine, Ag Haoussa joined the Coordination of Azawad Movements, a coalition of Tuareg separatists, in 2013 after a French military intervention in the north of the country pushed out the militants.

The Coordination of Azawad Movements signed a peace accord with Mali’s government in June last year but the group has since then repeatedly clashed with pro-government militias known as the Platform over control of towns in the remote north, including the Kidal region.
