The sale comes as the fine wine market is rallying after a 40 percent drop in prices of many Bordeaux first growths since 2011. “Market activity picked up this week, increasing by both value and volume,” Liv-ex said in its Talking Trade market blog. The Fine Wine 50 index “is now at its highest level since the beginning of May 2013.”

Other more recent wines in the sale include 12 bottles of Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 1982 carrying an upper estimate of 7,000 pounds and six bottles of Petrus 1982 priced at up to 16,000 pounds, according to Sotheby’s.

Two 12-bottle lots of Chateau Lafite Rothschild from the 2000 vintage may sell for as much as 11,000 pounds each, while two similar cases of Mouton 2000 carry a top estimate of 14,000 pounds each, according to the auction house.
