U.S. equity markets have yet to show much preference in the presidential election. No matter how the fortunes of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump swing, the S&P 500 Index hasn’t responded in any discernible pattern. In the year leading up to the first debate of the general election, the correlation between the benchmark for American equity and the difference between the average poll numbers for the two candidates has vacillated, suggesting no relationship.
