Hollande May Place Fifth in Election If Macron Runs, Poll Shows

French President Francois Hollande may come in fifth in next year’s presidential election if his former economy minister Emmanuel Macron makes a competing bid for power, a poll showed.

The incumbent Socialist would garner about 10 percent of the vote, placing him behind Macron and Left Front leader Jean-Luc Melenchon, according to an Ipsos poll for Le Monde newspaper published Monday. Either former President Nicolas Sarkozy or former Prime Minister Alain Juppe would be competing with National Front leader Marine Le Pen in the run-off vote in May next year, according to the survey.

Ipsos interviewed 18,659 voters between Sept. 9 and 18.
