Trading on China’s equity exchanges has gone from mighty to minimal as shares tread water amid speculation the authorities are seeking to maintain stability in the world’s second-largest stock market. Five-day average turnover fell to 364 billion yuan ($55 billion), the lowest since November 2014 and down from more than 2 trillion yuan last year. The dullness in shares contrasts with a booming housing market and an equity rally across the border in Hong Kong.
